Visual arts give us an opportunity to reach the viewer’s heart and mind in a way that cannot always be expressed otherwise. Each year, my 9-12th grade students participate in an art project centered on raising the awareness of the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The objective for freshman students is to learn about the goals, create a likeness of an endangered animal, tree or plant based on Goal 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 (Life on Land) using colored pencil and ink. The objective for upperclassmen is to consider empathetic expression and impactful imagery while mastering combining three or more materials together (ie: acrylic, collage, watercolor, ink, etc.) for any one of the 17 Goals they choose.
This art project guides students to research and consider the implications of the responsibility we have in caring for God’s creation, to share the challenges visually, to brainstorm solutions and to share their expression with the world. I believe art is an extension of the soul, and a personal way to connect with our creator and the world around us. -Ms. Manning

United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals Project
Project Overview
During their time in art class, many students will have the opportunity to explore the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals with the mission of sharing the written goals in a visual format that engages the viewer and brings about awareness while students are challenged to translate textual content into an artistic experience.

Context
Governments, businesses and civil society together with the United Nations have started to mobilize efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Agenda by 2030. Universal, inclusive and indivisible, the Agenda calls for action by all countries to improve the lives of people everywhere.
On September 25, 2015, countries adopted a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as a part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years.
For the goals to be reached, everyone needs to do their part: governments, the private sector, civil society and people like you. –UN.org website
